The Alter Rebbe, author of the Tanya. His gaze lifts past the viewer. The beard falls in ridges of knifed white.
The Alter Rebbe once heard his infant grandson crying while his own son sat learning, too absorbed to notice. He came down and soothed the child himself. Then he said gently, one must never be so high in his learning that he cannot hear a child cry.
